Hello all here is my first review of hopefully many DC Direct statue/ prop products. My intention is not to put the product under the microscope but to give you a quick owner review that will not take you an hour to read.
George Perez Black and White
Sculpted by Karen Palinko
Packaging: Design wise this box falls right in line with the previous Black and White Statues. It features the original artwork it is based on on a side panel with photos of the finished product on the other three sides. The actual foam packaging inside was great. Well tailored to fit the product and will be a cinch to put the statue back in the box. Unfortunately like most if not all the previous B&W's no COA.
Design: A classic Batman by one of DC's great artists. This is a definitive Batman and the pose has volumes of presence in it's simplicity. It is a great representation of Perez's Batman with the exception of the "new style" symbol and belt. The oval logo and canister belt is what the majority of Perez's work typically would feature based on the time it was done.
Sculpt. Karen Palinko did an excellent job transforming a 2D drawing into a 3D statue. The figure is designed to be walking forward with his cape billowing around him and Palinko's work makes it difficult to decide which angle to display Batman from as he is fantastic at all 360 degrees.
Execution: DCD did a decent job producing the work. My minor gripe would be that one "Bat ear" is not as thick as the other. My major gripe is that the pegs on the base do not line up well with the holes in the feet. I did not force mine but left one foot loose. I imagine that there may be more than a few collectors who will either crack Bat's right leg or break it off at the groin. I included this as a section as I do not feel that the artisans should be criticized for how their work is reproduced.
Paint. Black and White. As with the other statues flat Black and White for the figure with gloss boots and gloves. The paint on the statue is applied well and cleanly with no complaints. The base however did present some issues with craftsmanship. The white areas of the logo were not applied at sufficient intensity so the black bleeds through in spots. Not a huge distraction but it does look like the base has been in my home for 30 years rather than 3 hours.
Overall value: This is a fantastic piece. I love the design and the presence Perez's work typically has to it. Palinko has captured the Perez artwork that I consider to be part of the definitive DC beautifully. I don't know where the collective consciousness of fans is as we approach 20 B&W's but even if your interest has waned this will be a wonderful addition to the collection. The $75 price tag is a bit steep in light of what the B&W's used to sell for but this one is far nicer than a few of the earlier statues. As far as future value goes the edition size is on the large end at 3600 pieces. I doubt that this will fetch "Mignola Money" on ebay anytime soon.
DCcollector gives this 9/10 almost perfect but the production issues pulled it back a touch.
I hope my maiden review was palatable and let me know if you would like me to continue, where to grow or if you like where to go....
Take care CCC![]()
