In 1966, Batman was the hottest show on television, Adam West and Burt Ward were two of the most popular people in the country, and Bat merchandise was selling everywhere.
The networks, realizing the success of Batman, quickly scrambled to find the next big "Super" show.
In 1967, Batman producer William Dozier asked one of his script writers, Stanley Ralph Ross, to write a script for a Wonder Woman TV series. The hopes were to make Wonder Woman every bit as popular as Batman and Robin!
Stanley Ralph Ross was a perfect choice as writer for the upcoming show. Not only did he narrate Batman, (
"Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel!") he was also known as the "Comic Book" guy in Hollywood.
Based on Stanley's script, a pilot episode of "Wonder Woman: Who's Afraid of Diana Prince?" was filmed by Warner Bros. Wonder Woman was played by two people. Ellie Wood Walker played Wonder Woman/Diana Prince the conceited mirror version of Wonder Woman was played by Linda Harrison.
This was a campy sitcom take on the Amazon Princess which is probably why it ultimately failed, never getting past the pilot episode. Some people will probably say that a Batgirl series planned for the same year doomed Wonder Woman, especially since everyone already had "Bat Fever". After watching some of the trailer, I will let you decide.
This five minute pilot episode, makes the original Batman TV series look like The Dark Knight! I am surprised Warner Bros. spent money to have the pilot filmed.
With all that said it does offer some historic value. This is the first time we Wonder Woman on film and Ellie Wood Walker is technically the first women to play her on film.
Well now that you have a little backstory, pop some popcorn, sit back and enjoy "Wonder Woman: Who's Afraid of Diana Prince?"...
