Finally an opportunity for another review! I apologize that I am so beat while writing this but I wanted DCC to have a jump on some of the other sites.
JLA Build-A-Scene Statue Part 1 Batman & Wonder Woman
Sculpted by Alterton Bizarre Based on the art of Ed Benes
DCcollector score: 8/10
Packaging: The box complements the design of the issue # 7 of JLA on which the statue is based. It features the original artwork it is based on a side panel with photos of the finished product on the other three sides. The foam packaging inside was well tailored to fit the product and will be a cinch to put the statue back in the box. COA was included in a plastic sleeve taped to the foam shell. A nice touch was the inclusion of a plastic slip to keep WW and the lasso of truth from rubbing up against Bats.
Design: A pretty timeless pose, heroes charging into battle. The positioning of the bodies is an identical mirror to that of the cover art. Once fully assembled the full piece may suffer from being so closely tied to the source material, Superman not in flight and the Flash in stride with the others, but that remains to be seen.
Sculpt. Alterton Bizarre did a great job turning the cover art into a 3D statue. Some of the figures coolest aspects are those not seen in the art work. The backs of the Batman and Wonder Woman are very well done and contain interesting lines. The side profiles of the piece, I feel, are the superior viewing angles for the statue.
Execution: One of DCD's better productions. The piece was sculpted and painted flawlessly. I did not have any bleeding, sloppy lines or uneven paint spots on mine. Batman's boots and gauntlets are a great gloss which nicely compliments the rest of the paint job. The lasso of truth is a golden metal and a lovely touch.
Paint. One of DCD's best paint jobs of late. I touched on Batman's costuming above and a nice treat was the employment of an airbrushed style detailing that brought a depth to the grays in Batman suit noticeable absent from recent pieces. The skin tones on both Batman and Wonder Woman are in fact tones as opposed to a uniform paint application that DCD has been guilty of in the past. If I have one gripe it is that WW's eyes may be too prominent and she looks a bit more animated than Batman. I do however give the producers of the piece the benefit of the doubt on this as they are done to mirror the artwork and as such the eyes took on that dynamic. The rest of the lines in the face a lovely with subtle shades employed to accent her features.
Overall value: This is a wonderful piece. As I noted above Alterton Bizarre did an admirable job translating the artwork into 3D. The statue itself is a decent scale with Batman weighing in 1/2 way between the Hush statue and a B&W. My LCS was selling them to file customers at $150. Considering that a Bowen Designs Marvel statue retails for $175-185 this is great value as you get two complete characters 2/3 the size as well the tornado portion of Red Tornado.
DCcollector gives this 8/10 a great piece and value. A touch handcuffed by the source material. Part one looks fabulous but may not be a greatly dynamic stand alone piece.
As always pic's have been sent to Ashley and will be attached ASAP
Take care CCC![]()
