The Character
Trigon was created as a progeny of a female member of a mystic sect and the god she worshipped. This should serve as a cautionary tale about sleeping with deities, because Trigon was born and, as a personification of evil energies of Azarath, killed everyone around him, including his mother. Arella, a depressed woman, joins the Church of Blood, which is trying to kill Trigon through a ritual. After the ritual, Trigon appears, disguised as a human male, and marries Arella. After she becomes pregnant, Arella discovers Trigon’s true nature, is brought to Azarath by an interdimensional cult, and gives birth to the hero Raven. Raven is taught to control her emotions in order to suppress demonic powers and Trigon’s influence. After joining the Teen Titans, Raven and her teammates are able to trap Trigon in an interdimensional prison, though he is still able to meddle in her life. Trigon escaped and possessed Raven, using her to destroy Azarath. The Titans came together to kill Trigon but were possessed and, in turn, killed Raven instead. Unfortunately, Raven planned for her death at the Titans hands, and the souls of Azarath possessed her, destroying Trigon utterly and completely. Brother Blood and others have tried to revive Trigon, and there’s little doubt he’ll return at some point.
Presentation
Trigon stands about 9 ½ inches at the horns and has a body most similar to Atom Smasher, though maybe a little beefier. He has all of the standard DCUC articulation, even the thigh cut, which has been absent in some C&C figures. Trigon features a sculpted loincloth, chest strap, and bicep strap and two different gauntlets, all of which are very good. The paint is also very good, right down to the painted black nails, with only minor bleed on the chest and bicep straps.
Accessories
Trigon comes with a long scepter that features a dragon on an orb, with its tail spiraling on the top half of the staff. It’s a pretty cool staff, though the dragon piece above the orb is made of a softer plastic than the shaft. Trigt on also has a cloth and wire cape with a collar piece that attaches snugly in Trigon’s back with a rectangular peg.
What I like
I really like the head sculpt and the infuriated look on his face. The teeth, eyebrows, and eyes (even the second set, which are sculpted) have excellent paint work. Though Trigon is clearly demonic, the blonde hair seems to me to show that he is not a pure demon. There is also excellent sculpting on the folds of the loincloth and the texturing of the skull and gauntlets.
What I don’t
Trigon’s boots are painted on, rather than sculpted, and though I like the right hand sculpt (which holds the scepter more openly than the left), it is difficult to get the staff in two hands, as both the hands tilt out away from the figures body. I’m also torn about the cloth cape, which is a first for DCUC. While it’s nice to bend the wire and pose it any way you want, it’s also a bit long, so you have to flare it out and curl it so it doesn’t drag on the ground. It’s also semi-transparent and I have fears about it getting dirty or damaged. Mattel indicated it was a packaging issue, but it’s maybe a half inch longer than the staff and not very wide, so it seems to me they could’ve done a plastic one. Perhaps it would’ve been to heavy to allow the figure to stand, as well.
Issues/Problems
My figure had a severely stuck right shoulder, one of the worst I’ve encountered. I thought it might break off the peg, but after some time in the freezer, I was able to slowly get it working. With the same problem on wave 12’s Darkseid C&C, I hope this isn’t going to become a trend.
Summary
Overall, I am surprised how much I like this figure. I wasn’t a big Trigon fan, so it’s not like I was begging for him or really excited when he was announced as the Collect and Connect figure. The sculpt is just excellent, and the white on the figure really makes his red skin pop—it’s a home run.
