The Character
Stuntman/special effects wizard Daniel Cassidy creates and dons a powered exoskeleton on a movie set and uses it to stop a demon, Nebiros, who was accidentally released by his co-stars. After the battle, Cassidy discovers the costume has been permanently grafted to his body. Using his powers as a hero, he battles a variety of strange villains, even joining the Justice League. Later, he makes a deal with Neron to become more famous, inadvertently destroying his relationship with Kid Devil, who also bargains with Neron, and becomes an actual demon. I always thought this arc was odd and a misguided effort to make Blue Devil “gritty.” His self-designed trident is rocket-powered, allowing him to fly at high speed for short distances.
Presentation
The sculpt is incredible, taking a cue from the cover of Blue Devil #1, a comic I had since I bought it at the corner store in 1984.
The 4 Horsemen did a great job on the head sculpt as well, nailing the horns, brows, beard and jovial expression. The blues are a wonderful contrast, with the light skin standing out well against the rich dark blue of his boots, gauntlets and torso. Unfortunately, with the yellow, they’ve added the orange highlights they’ve used with limited success on characters like Captain Marvel. Some of the cut lines around the yellow are not as sharp as I’d like, and the bottom of his trunks obviously presented sculpting issues, as it runs where the hip joint is and the legs meet the torso piece.
Accessories
Blue Devil comes with his trusty rocket-powered trident.
C&C parts
Trigon’s torso and, more importantly, cloth cape.
What I like
I just really like the sculpt in general, but specifically, the way the blue uniform and yellow belt are sculpted perfectly around the torso crunch. I also really like the job they did on the trident, giving it a more technological look than Aquaman’s.
What I don’t
In addition to the orange highlights on the yellow pieces and some shady paint cut-lines, Blue Devil's earring is sculpted, but mine still has blue plastic in the middle.
Issues/Problems
This figure is very solid, with great joints, even in the ankle, where I’ve had the most issues.
Summary
Blue Devil is one of the figures I’ve wanted forever—he’s blue (my favorite color), unique and cool-looking, and was just a fun, late-80s, offbeat DC hero.
Tidbit
I think this will be the hardest DCUC figure to find in this wave, as customizers may want to get as many cloth capes (with built-in wire) as they can.
